Why Doesn’t My Furnace Ignite in Slidell, LA?

It’s chilly in Slidell, LA, and your furnace decided to take a vacation. A system that won’t fire up is a major bummer, especially when it’s cold outside. Before you panic, let’s troubleshoot some common culprits that might prevent your furnace from igniting.

Thermostat Troubles

Sometimes, the simplest solution is the right one. Check your thermostat settings to see if you set it to “heat” or if you set the temperature higher than the current room temperature. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often this is the issue.

Also, make sure the thermostat has fresh batteries. If you put the batteries in and nothing happens, then you know to call an HVAC maintenance technician for help.

Pilot Light Problems

Older furnaces use a pilot light to ignite the gas burners. This little flame can sometimes go out due to drafts or a buildup of debris. If it’s out, you can usually relight it yourself by following the instructions on your furnace; however, if it won’t stay lit, you might have a faulty thermocouple that needs replacing.

Faulty Ignitor

Most modern furnaces have an electronic ignitor instead of a pilot light. This ignitor can wear out over time and fail to create the spark needed for ignition. A bad ignitor often requires replacement, which is best left to a professional technician.

Blocked Gas Supply

If you have no gas, then you have no flame. Ensure the gas valve to your furnace is turned on.

If it is, there might be a blockage in the gas line somewhere. This is a serious safety hazard, so contact your gas company immediately if you suspect a gas leak.

Dirty Flame Sensor

The flame sensor is a safety device that shuts off the gas if it doesn’t detect a flame. A dirty flame sensor can’t “see” the flame and will prevent the furnace from igniting. Gently clean the sensor with fine sandpaper to remove any soot or debris.

If you’ve checked all these things and your furnace still won’t ignite, it’s time to call in the pros. A licensed HVAC technician can diagnose the problem accurately and get your furnace running again in no time. If you need furnace repair services, our team at Vallee Air Conditioning and Heating can help, so call now.
